Serve if you can.
If you
are not able to do any service, just carry on with your
worldly responsibilities and keep praying to God. This
too is Yoga.
If
you take up some service, aim at perfection.
Wisdom
can be attained through focused meditation too; but the
mystic poet Bharathiyar's definition of Yoga is, 'Oorukku uzhaithidal Yogam' – rendering service to
society. And, you can evolve gradually from perfection
to excellence.
Karma Yoga
(performance of one’s ordained duties) too is an
effective instrument for meditation. Meditation is
focusing your mind on something. So, if you involve
yourself totally, with absolute concentration on
whatever task you have on hand, that becomes meditation.
The mind must not waver anywhere.
Everything that you
do at Samratchana is tailored towards helping you become
enlightened.
It is my duty as
an Acharya (spiritual guide) to point out where
you are right and where you are wrong. That is the only
way you can progress spiritually. If a teacher does
not correct the answers of the students, how can he
claim to be a good teacher? And I am not just a teacher;
I am a Master and therefore I guide you along the
right path, despite whatever effort or time it takes to
train each one according to his or her capacity.
You can be either a
good student or resign yourself to some manual labor.
If you decide to be a student, you must work hard.
Similarly, it is your choice to serve or not. Once
you decide to enter into service, you have to perform.
Remember that performance is penance. You have to give
it your 100% best.
Do not seek
appreciation. When you perform to excellence,
performance is itself your reward. Do not be
affected by any criticism. The more of such criticism
you face, the harder you must strive for excellence.
Learn to look at praise and criticism with equanimity of
mind, unaffected.
Remember that
whatever I say is for your good only. I have nothing but
your progress in mind. when I point out your faults,
it is only because I want you to improve, I want to
bring out the divinity that is hidden in you. More
importantly, I want to destroy your ego, because ego
impedes progress.
The highest state of
yoga is to conquer bodily ego. Once you realize that you
are not the physical form but the container for a spirit
that cannot be affected by anything, you will let go
of ego. And that is the start of spiritual
attainment.
You have decided to
take part in this drama. You must play your role to
perfection. If you falter somewhere, the director is
bound to find fault. Since he has rehearsed the whole
drama in his mind, he can very easily guide you to do
well. And if you obey him, you will win the best actor
award, wouldn’t you? So too, when you render service,
you are playing a role. As a director, I am duty bound
to correct you to be more practical or more emphatic or
tell you whatever is required of you to play your role
to excellence.
Our aim at Sree
Ramarajya is to achieve the excellence that God has set
as the standard for humanity. When you choose to
abide by this process, you are choosing the right
option.
I am a meticulous
person. This is not ego. It is a sense of achievement.
Whatever I do, I do with careful attention to minute
details.
You may differ with
me at present; you may even be angry when I steer you.
But a time will come in your life, when you recollect
all of life’s incidents in a mellowed frame of mind; and
you will understand what a highly positive contribution
I have made towards your progress to your personality.
I can train you in
management the way no university can teach you. I
know so much by intuition. Remember what Vivekananda
said, ‘Education is the manifestation of perfection that
is already in you’. I have become a perfectionist, and
whatever I do, my perfection manifests itself in that.
It is because you
wanted to make a difference to your life - - not just
love and die - - that you are here. So, shred all the
negative qualities that are obstacles in fulfilling this
aim of yours.
And remember this: I
have no difference of opinion with any of you. When I
criticize something, I am not criticizing personalities;
I am criticizing the work. This is my role as your
spiritual guide and as in anything else, I will play my
role perfectly, and I am accountable to God for it. I
gain nothing from what I do or from whatever you do as
service.
If you are
working in a company, are you not accountable there to
some boss? We are serving God, the Supreme Boss, and we
are accountable to Him. We must not waste even a single
second, because Time is His.
If you have
understood all that I said so far and you still choose
to serve, then shed your ego.
Face yourself
boldly, understand your faults and follies and work at
improvising your strengths and getting over your
weaknesses. And then when you look hack at life, you
will be immensely happy with what you have accomplished
for yourself.
